Dictating Your Book

1/26/2016

So, I recently finished reading, Dictate Your Book, by Monica Leonelle and it's got me doing some experimenting. I'll tell you what: I can speak a whole hell of a lot faster than I can type. I'm using Dragon Dictate and a Logitech wireless headset for some really impressive results.
I didn't really think I'd care for it, but when I see words hitting the page 3 to 4 times faster than typing ... let's just say, I've been converted.
It takes a little getting used to, speaking your punctuation and returns, but it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. My only concern now is that I'll start inserting punctuation when I'm talking to someone. So far, so good, though.

This template is based on the book, Anatomy Of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, by John Truby.
I start with the 22 steps and expand outward from there, adding in all the scenes between.

Storyist Works With Scrivener Files

1/13/2016

It's interesting to me just how long Scrivener has been working on an iOS version. It's also incredibly disappointing. I've never seen so many broken promises—well, unless you count political promises, of course. Now, I love Scrivener, I do, but my workflow demands an iOS version. Yes, you can sync with an external folder if you're on a Mac so you can have your mobile writing. There are some apps that sorta work for that. Well, guess what? I hate that shit. What's a guy to do?

Storyist. Storyist is the answer. I've switched entirely, truth be told, but you don't have to. If you like your Scrivener, you can keep your Scrivener. (sounds like a political promise, but I assure you, it is not) You see, Storyist for iOS edits Scrivener files. No more syncing workaround. You're working on the same file. It's magical.

L&L is working hard to keep this quiet. I'm not. People should know about this.

Here are some of the sticky points that I've seen people lose their minds over:
1) It's a $15 app.
2) Say goodbye to Dropbox. If you want Storyist for iOS to read your Scrivener files, you'll have to put it in iCloud.
3) Formatting problems. The trick is to set up your styles within Storyist to match what you've got going on in Scrivener. (font, spacing, indents, etc.) OR, forget about perfect formatting on iOS and convert it back to your defaults within Scrivener. Sometimes that's way easier.

Storyist Templates

One of the things I miss about Scrivener is the wealth of user templates available out there for download. So, my goal is to start compiling some. I posted this one today, http://www.rustyhenrichsen.com/storyist-templates.html, based on Larry Brooks Story Engineering.

For my next trick, I am thinking about John Truby's method from The Anatomy of Story.
